A Catchment Area Guide to Primary Schools In and Around Highbury

There’s much to love and about living in Highbury and one of the main advantages of moving here is being able to send your children to some of best schools London has to offer. Our catchment area guide to primary schools in and around Highbury tells you everything you need to know about the schools and local property market.

St John’s Highbury Vale CofE Primary School

Located on Conewood Street, N5 1DL, Ofsted awarded this school an ‘outstanding’ certificate during their last inspection. 30 new pupils are admitted into their reception class every year and the catchment area extends across most of Blackstock Road, Aubert Park and Drayton Park.

Catchment area

House prices in the surrounding area vary, with properties on Drayton Park costing an average of £500,000. Terraced properties on Aubert Park are more expensive, costing an average of £1.65m and semis go for around £1.8m. Blackstock Road prices are a more affordable, with prices averaging around £400,000 over the past 12 months.

Gillespie Primary School

Another primary school in Highbury highly rated by parents and the governing body is Gillespie Primary school, which is on Gillespie Road, N5 1LH. Under the distance criterion, the last pupil admitted lived 0.116 miles away. You can view the cut-off map here. Every year 30 places are available in the reception class.

Catchment area

Chatterton Road is a short distance away from the school and within the catchment zone. Average prices for a property here sit at £1.2m, and on the west side of the catchment area in Canning Road, you may be able to secure a 3-bedroom house for a similar price. If you are looking at moving to Gillespie Road itself, expect to pay a little closer to £1.7m for a larger 4-bedroom terraced house.

Ambler Primary School and Children’s Centre

Visit Blackstock Road, N4 2DR, in Highbury and you’ll find Ambler Primary School. It’s another in a long list of schools in the area awarded the ‘outstanding’ mark by Ofsted in recent years. There are 60 new places available each year in reception and as of September 2021, the last pupil admitted under the distance criterion lived 0.143 miles away. Catchment area

Prices are more than reasonable inside the local catchment area. For example, a large, 8-bedroom end of terrace property goes for around £1.2m. Average prices along the road overall stand at around £560,000. 4-bedroom terraced houses on Romilly Road are priced close to £1.4m, while a 3-bedroom terrace on Monsell Road could be snapped up for about £1m.

Samuel Rhodes MLD School

Samuel Rhodes is classed as a special needs school and also welcomes secondary aged children and pupils aged 16-18. It’s located on Highbury New Park, N5 2EG, and is funded to provide 30 places for children aged 5-11. It is located on the top floor of a mainstream school called Montem Primary.

Catchment area

Hornsey Road is located just around the corner from the school and prices for 3-bedroom maisonettes tend to go for around £500,000. On average, semi-detached houses on Hornsey Road are available for £1.4m. Newington Barrow Way is only a few minutes’ walk away from the school and average prices for terraced properties there are close to £950,000.
