Holloway is a great option for people looking for a home in North London. More affordable than neighbouring locations like Highgate or Islington, it has a wealth of amenities for residents to enjoy, and fantastic proximity to all the capital’s attractions.
Once a rural area, it’s boomed since the turn of the 20th century, and is now one of the area’s rising hotspots. If you’re considering Holloway for your next move, here are five reasons to convince you to buy or rent a property in the area.
Why should I move to Holloway?
It’s undergone serious regeneration
A few decades ago, Holloway was regarded as a less desirable location than places like Islington. However, the closure of Holloway Prison, combined with plans to build thousands of new homes on the old prison site, marks a new era for the area.
Arsenal’s football ground has enhanced Holloway further, and there has also been an increase in new restaurants, shops and bars. This all combines to make a location that’s becoming more sought-after by the day.
It’s ideal for commuters
When it comes to easy journeys into Central London, few places can compete with Holloway. It’s served by both the Piccadilly and Northern Lines, and boasts several tube stations in the vicinity; Holloway Road, Caledonian Road, Upper Holloway, Arsenal, Archway, and Highbury & Islington. It’s also just over 3 miles away from Charing Cross, and the A1 is conveniently close by.
It’s a haven for period property lovers
Holloway has some fantastic period homes, particularly Victorian terraces. Most of these terraces are spread over three or four storeys, and those working to a budget will be pleased to know that many have been sub-divided into apartments.
Although property prices are on the rise, they remain more affordable than other parts of North London. In fact, it’s possible to get a generously proportioned three-bedroomed flat with outdoor space for less than the capital’s average.
Key desirable locations in Holloway include the Mercers Road and Tavistock Terrace conservation area, and the Hillmarton conservation area too. Manor Gardens is also popular, thanks to the Beaux Arts Building, which consists of over 160 apartments.
There’s plenty to do
Unsurprisingly, there are lots of attractions and entertainment venues in and around Holloway. Emirates Stadium is a must-see for all football fans (whether supporters of Arsenal or not), and music acts often perform there too. Freightliners City Farm is open to the community and is great for kids, and Barnard Park has an adventure playground, plus sports facilities.
There are also some excellent local pubs, like The Edward Lear, North Nineteen, and Bedford Tavern.
It has some highly regarded schools
Holloway is great for people of all ages, and this includes families with children. The Camden School for Girls is nearby, and boasts formidable exam results (a 94% 5+ GCSE pass-rate – which is 34% higher than the national average). Parliament Hill School is another high-achieving establishment, as is St Mary Magdalene Academy (a primary and secondary mixed-gender school).
