Five Reasons to Move to Angel

Angel is one of London’s most sought-after locations. Situated in the Borough of Islington, it’s got a reputation for attracting creative types, and has a personality that’s entirely unique. Make no mistake though, this neighbourhood isn’t just for trendy twenty-somethings. It’s also really popular with families, thanks to the great local schools and amenities.

Originally named after The Angel Inn (which was built in the 17th century), the area is a wonderful spot for a night out, and is also the place to head for some retail therapy. If you’re thinking of moving to Angel, here are five more reasons why you should invest in the area.

Why move to Angel?

It’s well connected

Angel is ideal for those who want to live close to Central London, but equally want a bit of breathing space from the bustle. It takes just a few minutes to get from Angel tube station to locations like Waterloo and Tottenham Court Road, or alternatively, there are buses running from Angel to destinations across the capital.

It’s regarded as an investment hotspot

Rewind a few decades, and Angel was regarded as a somewhat downtrodden neighbourhood. However, it was significantly improved during the 1980s and 1990s, transforming it into the characterful area that it is today. The renovation of the tube station contributed significantly to the improvement of Angel too, and the introduction of the Business Improvement District made it appealing for companies of all sizes.

It boasts countless period properties

Angel has an abundance of stunning period properties; notably Georgian, Edwardian and Victorian terraced homes. These elegant townhouses are usually sizeable, with multiple bedrooms and reception rooms. Even better, many have been extensively renovated, and not only offer original features, but also plenty of 21st century mod-cons. The really desirable streets are Colebrooke Row (where Boris Johnson used to live) and Duncan Terrace.

There are several other more affordable property styles on the market, which is good for those who are working to a budget. The ex-council homes offer tremendous value for money, with many having spacious dimensions throughout. There are also some great apartment blocks, and new-builds too – ideal for those who prefer contemporary properties.

As for landlords? The good news is that the rental market is booming in Angel. It’s not uncommon for a three- or four-bedroomed property to bring in over £1,000 a week, and even one-bedroomed apartments can generate as much as £500 per week.

There’s lots to see and do

Entertainment is plentiful in Angel. The Almeida Theatre is regarded as one of the city’s premier venues, and Sadler’s Wells is great for dance fanatics. There’s also the O2 Academy Islington, and various other major attractions within easy reach, like SEA LIFE Aquarium. Shoppers will love the wealth of retail stores in areas like Upper Street.

The schools are excellent

Families with children will appreciate the high-quality educational establishments in and around this area. Central Foundation Boys’ School was recently awarded ‘outstanding’ in its Ofsted report, and City of London Academy was rated ‘good’. There are also several great primary schools, like Ambler Primary, and Canonbury Primary School.
